What began as a happy celebration of Mark’s son’s graduation quickly fell into chaos. Mark’s in-laws had planned an elegant family dinner, but when Mark invited his parents to attend the festivities, tensions erupted. The evening ended with a surprising clash and an unexpected reaction from his wife, leaving Mark feeling baffled and disappointed. Finding a solution, he turned to us for advice.
This is Mark’s letter:
My in-laws invited 12 relatives to a fancy restaurant for my son’s graduation. I asked my parents to come too since we were celebrating their grandson.
When the bill came, my father-in-law paid the $1700 and asked me to pay the 18% tip because “I brought guests.” I refused and left. My wife was quiet.
Later that night, I got the most horrifying text on my phone. It was from my wife.

She wrote, “Forget about me for some time. You ruined our only son’s celebration and embarrassed me in front of my entire family for a few hundred dollars.”
I went home and froze when I found our room almost empty. My wife had moved out and taken almost all of her stuff. It’s been three days, and she still doesn’t answer her phone.

I know she’s angry, but I expected her to stand by me instead of blaming me. It’s her dad who insulted my parents by treating them as unwanted guests.
Do you think my reaction was wrong?
